No relief from heat wave as temperature nears 40
THE mercury touched 39.1 degrees Celsius yesterday, triggering the second orange heat wave alert and setting a new city record for the hottest day so far this year, forecasters said.
The mercury soared in the morning and the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued the year’s second orange alert at 8:40am. By 2:20pm, temperatures had soared to 39 degrees. The Nanpu Bridge monitoring station recorded a high of 40 degrees, while Songjiang District recorded 40.7 degrees at 4pm.
The sizzling conditions will remain today and tomorrow. On Sunday, the high will drop to 36 degrees.
There will be some relief from the scorching weather next week after the subtropical high heads southwards.
It is believed that the number of high temperature — days with a high of over 35 degrees — this summer will be between 14 to 21 days. Last year, Shanghai had only 12 such days.
The number of days with a high of up 37 degrees — and touching 40 — is expected to be 4 to 7, more than the usual 4 days, forecasters said.
