No more free rides
SHANGHAI’S senior citizens will no longer be able to take buses or the Metro for free starting from tomorrow. Previously, citizens over the age of 70 were entitled to free Metro or bus rides during non-peak hours. However, it has put too much pressure on the city’s transportation system.
According to the new policy coming into effect at 10am tomorrow, senior citizens will have to pay the fare like everyone else, but will receive subsidies on a monthly basis. In 2015, an average of 412,600 people over the age of 70 took free bus rides every day. The number is expected to drop significantly once the policy is implemented.
