New wheelchair taxis

FIFTY wheelchair-accessible Nissan NV200 taxis hit the streets of Shanghai yesterday, joining the 50 Geely TX4 “London cabs” that Qiangsheng introduced in October 2014.

It is the only taxi company in Shanghai that has wheelchair-accessible taxis.

The gold-colored Nissan taxis feature a more slip-resistant ramp with a slope of 10.5 degrees, making them more wheelchair-accessible than the Geely.

The Nissan taxis charge the same rate as the “London cabs.” Both have a flag-down fare of 19 yuan (US$2.9), 5 yuan more than normal taxis, and 2.8 yuan per kilometer after 3 kilometers. Passengers can hire the taxis by calling the company’s dispatch hotline 6258-0000 or by hailing them on the street.

Priority will be given to people in wheelchairs who make a reservation one day in advance, the company said.
