New terminal at Hongqiao makes flying less hassle

HONGQIAO International Airport check-in and security checks were faster at the newly renovated Building A terminal that opened yesterday.

Passengers, however, are still advised to arrive early at the airport until the system beds down.

All domestic and international flights at T1 of the Hongqiao airport have been moved to Building A, while the old Building B at T1 is closed for reconstruction.

Passengers spent less time yesterday checking in luggage and undergoing security checks yesterday as more counters and security channels are in place at the new terminal building.

For passengers of international flights, 46 check-in and 27 frontier inspection counters have been set up, more than double what was at the old terminal building.

“It previously took me at least half an hour to finish the check-in and pass security checks at Hongqiao T1, but I spent only 15 minutes to finish all the procedures today,” said Kao Wensiang, a passenger from Taiwan who was flying to Tokyo on a business trip.

However, Shanghai Airport Authority advises passengers to allow at least two hours before take-off to become familiar with changes at the terminal. Passengers can call the airport hotline 96990 to ask for assistance.

Two passengers missed their flights with Spring Airlines yesterday morning due to the opening of the new terminal building. The budget carrier put them on following flights at no extra charge.

China Eastern will offer free ticket refunds for a week for anyone who misses their flights due to the opening of the new terminal building, said Feng Yifeng, director of the customer services center with the airline.

A new traffic center, with 1,250 parking lots, also opened to public yesterday. More than 300 vehicles were parked at the parking lots yesterday morning. The center is attached to the new terminal.

The charges are 10 yuan (US$1.45) for the first hour, and 5 yuan for each following hour, said Xiao Bin, deputy general manager with the traffic management department of the airport.

Passengers did not have to wait long for taxis because there were now eight waiting spaces for cabs, compared with two in the old terminal building, Xiao said.

Furthermore, a parking facility for taxis with 150 parking lots has been built 1.3 kilometers from the new terminal, he added. Taxi drivers could use the facility to await instructions to pick up passengers at the terminal.
