New line will keep secrets safe

A telecommunications line incorporating quantum-based data encryption technology will be put in place later this year to connect Shanghai and Beijing, media reported yesterday.

The 1,000-kilometer fiber-optic line, serving Shanghai, Beijing, Shandong and Anhui Province, will provide world-class encryption security for government bureaus and banks, said Pan Jianwei, executive vice chairman of the University of Science and Technology of China.

The new technology, which destroys data if they are intercepted, protects sensitive calls and information, experts said. It is already being trialled in Ji’nan, capital of Shandong Province.
