Nanpu Bridge off limits
NANPU Bridge will be closed for five hours tomorrow morning for maintenance checks, the city’s traffic authority said yesterday.
Engineers will carry out an inspection and run various tests between midnight and 5am, the Shanghai Transportation Commission said on its official microblog.
Diversions will be in place for the duration of the closure, which is the first in the bridge’s 23-year history, it said.
Nanpu Bridge, which opened in November 1991, was built to carry about 30,000 vehicles a day, though the actual figure is now nearer 120,000.
As a result, the cable-stayed structure, which spans the Huangpu River, needs to be assessed to ensure its safe operation, the commission said.
As well as the closure of the main body of the multi-lane bridge, and its entry and exit ramps in Puxi and Pudong, a section of the approach road between Xizang Road S. and the Longyang Road elevated road will be off limits to traffic for the five-hour period.
