Nakri set to bring rainstorms at weekend

A WET weekend is forecast as the fringes of Tropical Storm Nakri affect the city’s weather.

Nakri is due to pass by out at sea this morning, causing rainstorms in parts of the city.

Today’s temperature will range from 26 to 30 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.

The eye of Nakri could come as close as 300 kilometers to Shanghai, and it may pack wind speeds of between 25 to 30 meters per second — Grade 10 to 11, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Named after a Cambodian flower, Nakri was 490km southeast of the city over the East China Sea at 2pm yesterday, moving northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters issued a blue typhoon alert — the lowest of a four-color grading system — at 5am yesterday. The blue alert indicates Grade 6 wind strength.

The operational capacity at Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport was reduced by 30 percent yesterday, due to rain brought by Nakri, airport authorities said.

Some 53 flights scheduled to depart from the city’s two airports were canceled.

Airport authorities said there may be more disruptions today and advised passengers to check with their airlines before setting out.

Meanwhile, ships were ordered to return to port, and more measures were taken yesterday to prevent flooding in the city.

The Metro operator said drivers will drive manually at under at 20 kilometers per hour and some suburban stations will close, if the typhoon alert reaches orange — the second-highest level.
