More chargers set up for electric cars

SHANGHAI’S electric car owners can now find a charger or a charging station within 5 kilometers on average either in the city or on expressways, said Shanghai Electric Power Company, the major constructor of the city’s electric vehicle charging facilities.

According to the company, 227 public charging stations, 22 expressway charging stations and 12 public bus charging stations have been built around Shanghai this year, together with a further 5,084 chargers for individuals and companies.

Transport hubs, malls and metro stations are the priorities when considering locations for charging stations.

Eleven public charging stations have been built in Songjiang District this year, six of them located at park-and-ride lots beside metro stations.

Every station has been equipped with eight large current chargers, which can have the battery of an electric car charged by 80 percent within half an hour.

Three charging stations for buses have also been built in Songjiang this year, allowing 90 buses to be charged at the same time. A bus can run for 250 kilometers after every two to three hours of charge.

In the Pudong New Area, 34 charging stations have been built in the Free Trade Zone, Shanghai Disney Resort, former World Expo site, Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, as well as in areas around Qiantan and Lingang.

Currently, Shanghai has more than 20,000 electric car chargers. According to a blueprint issued by Shanghai Transport Committee earlier this year, the number is expected to reach 210,000 by 2020.
