Minus 4 as winter extremes on the way

TEMPERATURES will plummet to minus 4 degrees Celsius in parts of Shanghai today with the arrival of dongzhi — the winter solstice — which traditionally signifies that the coldest spell of winter is on the way.

Today is forecast to be cloudy, with the average city temperature ranging from zero to 7 degrees under the joint influence of a cold front and chill from the ground, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

It will likely be even colder in suburban areas with the mercury slipping to 2 to 4 degrees below zero this morning, forecasters said.

Sunny weather with some cloud will dominate the city early this week under the influence of high pressure, although a light haze of pollution is predicted today due to a weaker northwest wind, forecasters said yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon, air quality was lightly polluted in the city. Today is forecast to be lightly to moderately polluted, with the air quality index expected to reach 135 to 155. Tiny PM2.5 particles will be the major pollutant, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Tomorrow should be sunny, with temperatures between 1 and 11 degrees.

Christmas Eve is forecast to be cloudy with temperatures between 5 and 12 degrees.

And low pressure is set to make for a drizzly Christmas Day, with temperatures between 5 and 8 degrees.
