Mild pollution set to blow in with cold front

LIGHT to moderate pollution has been forecast for tomorrow with the arrival of a cold front, the city’s environment authority said yesterday.

Shanghai enjoyed pleasant air quality yesterday, but a round of light pollution will hit the city from this evening with the AQI is forecast to be between 130 and 150.

Tiny particle PM2.5 will be the major pollutant. The Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said the index is expected to continue climb to 160 tomorrow, or moderately polluted.

“A cold front from the north will bring pollutants into the city from the provinces of Henan, Anhui and Shandong,” a forecaster at the center told Shanghai Daily.

“But this round of pollution will not last for long and the air quality will improve from Saturday.”

The Yangtze River Delta’s air quality forecasting center said central and northern parts of the region will see light to moderate pollution. Good air quality is expected in coastal areas from Saturday, while inland areas might report some light pollution.

The cold front will cause a slight temperature drop, but good weather over the weekend. The Metrological Bureau said today will be 5-7 degrees Celsius with showers in some areas. It will be mainly sunny or cloudy in Shanghai from tomorrow until the beginning of next week.
