Metro users subjected to ID checks
SUBWAY users are being subjected to full-body security scans and identity checks under a program launched on a trial basis by the city’s Metro police in October, thepaper.cn reported yesterday.
A journalist with the news website spotted a portable gateway-style scanner manned by police officers at Hailun station — which serves both Lines 4 and 10 — and wrote a report about her findings.
The article said that all passengers entering the station were required to show their ID cards — or passports in the case of foreigners — and pass through the scanner before being allowed onto the platforms.
The report said that the system had been tested at 21 Metro stations across the city and that more than 13,000 passengers had undergone the “intensive inspections.”
The crackdown has led to 56 people being held for various offenses, it said without providing a detailed breakdown.
A police officer surnamed Li told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the authorities are considering ways to implement the new security checks across the whole subway network.
She was unable to explain exactly how this would work, but gave an indication of the huge number of police officers and pieces of equipment such a move would require.
“On average, each exit of the station would be staffed by about a dozen police officers,” she said.
Based on information taken from the Metro operator’s website, there are currently about 370 stations on the city’s subway network.
Assuming these have an average of four exits apiece, to implement the “intensive” security system would require 17,760 police officers.
“It would be difficult to have simultaneous inspections across the city’s entire subway network,” Li said.
