Mercury to slump for winter’s dawn as strong cold front heads into city

EVEN the most hardy of Shanghai dwellers might find it wise to slip on a warm vest, woolly jumper or quilted coat before leaving the house over the coming days, as the mercury is set to plummet.

The expected big chill is a result of a strong cold front heading into the city from northern China, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday as it issued a level-blue cold weather warning.

Today’s high is unlikely to make it to double digits, though that will be balmy compared with the predicted slide to 3 degrees tomorrow and further downwards into negative territory on Friday.

The good news is that the arrival of the cold will mean an end to the rain — the month through Monday was the second wettest on record — though any residual dampness might manifest itself as ice in some areas, the forecasters said.

People should also wrap up well against biting winds, they added.

Saturday is likely to be slightly warmer, though the mercury is not expected to rise much above 2 or 3 degrees.

As well as freezing car engines and human body parts, the arrival of the cold snap will bring relief to the statisticians at the weather bureau who have long been champing at the bit to announce the official start of winter.

“We will watch very closely to see if the average temperature stays below 10 degrees for five consecutive days,” said Kong Chunyan, a chief service officer at the bureau.

Only when such a run has been recorded can the authorities formally declare the public’s collective entry into the coolest season of the year.

With such a sharp decline in temperature on the cards, local hospitals have warned people with respiratory ailments to stay indoors whenever possible and to wrap up well against the cold if leaving home is unavoidable.
