Longer platforms for Line 5 stations
PLATFORMS are being extended on six stations on Metro Line 5 so that longer trains can be used on the line, following passenger complaints that trains are too crowded.
The Shanghai Development and Reform Commission has given approval for Chunshen Road, Yindu Road, Zhuanqiao Road, Beiqiao Road, Jianchuan Road and Dongchuan Road stations to have their platforms extended to 120 meters from the current 80 meters.
This will allow six-carriage trains to operate the route, instead of the four-carriage trains currently used on the service linking Minhang Development Zone to Xinzhuang Road Station.
Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, the subway operator, has been receiving complaints from passengers saying that trains on the line are too busy, especially during rush hour.
The project includes adjusting the power supply, air conditioning, drainage and firefighting facilities.
Shanghai Shentong did not give a detailed timetable for the work, which will not affect current operations.
A four-carriage train can carry at most 1,170 passengers, while a six-carriage train can increase the capacity by 50 percent, said officials.
The six stations are on the main section of the route.
From Dongchuan Road, there are currently four more stops toward the western end terminal of Minhang Development Zone.
A new southern section is under construction, starting from Dongchuan Road and extending southward to Nanqiao Town in Fengxian District.
It will be ready by 2017, according to an earlier blueprint.
