Line 19 may feature bullet trains
METRO Line 19, the first subway route connecting Chongming Island to downtown Shanghai, will likely use a bullet train, Sun Zhang, an Institute of Rail Transit professor with Tongji University told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
He said trips between the island and downtown will take about 45 minutes. It usually takes about 90 minutes to drive to the island and buses often take more than two hours.
Transportation authorities and rail experts are still discussing plans for the new line, including the type of train and location of stations. Financial details were not disclosed and neither was a time frame for construction.
“For now, the CRH6 bullet train is at the top of our wish list,” said Sun, who is on the research panel for Line 19. “Ordinary subway trains need traction substations every 2.5 kilometers, which is impossible for Line 19 since it will include either a long bridge or tunnel across the Yangtze River.”
He added this would not be the first commuter rail line using a bullet train in Shanghai. Jinshan Railway, formerly designated as Line 22, uses CRH2 bullet trains.
An official with the city’s transport commission reportedly said they are still studying whether the new line will use the existing Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge or a new one will be built, xinmin.cn reported yesterday.
One cabbie said the Metro line would be great news for taxi drivers since more than a third of them are from the island. Many rent small apartments downtown to avoid long commutes every day.
“I only go back to the island every one or two months,” said Huang Tao, a Chongming cabby who rents a place in Minhang District. “It’s so tiresome traveling back and forth all that way.”
