Line 1 to start services early

METRO operators will open the gates of Line 1’s station of Shanghai Railway Station early from today until March 15 for the convenience of passengers catching early trains.

The operator Shanghai Shentong Group said it would add as many as three extra trains for Line 1 from Shanghai Railway Station towards Xinzhuang before the start of the regular operation. The first train usually leaves the railway station at 5:30am.

The first two weeks of March is a busy travel time for migrant workers who return to the city from their hometowns after the Spring Festival. The station will open at 4:50am — 20 minutes earlier than schedule.

There are about 15 long-distance trains that arrive in Shanghai between 1am to 6am, ferrying in thousands of passengers. A large number of them wait outside the Line 1 Metro station to take the subway. A temporary canopy has also been put up for their convenience.
