Lights aim to reduce car crashes

THE city’s traffic authority said it plans to attach reflector lights to median barriers in downtown areas to make them easier to see at night and in bad weather.
“A series of inspections will be completed in March and the lights will be fitted by the end of the year,” said Dai Xiaojian, secretary-general of the transport commission.
“Many of the barriers in Huangpu, Jing’an, Xuhui and Minhang distracts have become damaged as a result of cars hitting them,” said Sun Jianping, a director at the commission.
“Eight major traffic accidents have been caused by such crashes,” said Yu Guoqiang, the local legislator who proposed the plan.
The reflectors, which are powered by solar energy collected during the day, will switch on automatically in the dark, Dai said.
