It’s summer and that’s official

SHANGHAI has officially entered summer.

It did so on May 18, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau announced. By Monday, the city recorded five days of daily average temperatures higher than 22 degrees Celsius after the solar term of lixia occurred on May 5, making last Thursday the first day of this year’s summer.

On average, Shanghai enters summer around May 28, according to records from 1981 to 2016. The earliest summer was on May 6, 2009; the latest on June 24, 1995.

Thunderstorms will sweep across the city today, slightly lowering the temperature to 27 degrees, forecasters said.

Tomorrow will be overcast, giving residents a short break from the heat. Mercury will fluctuate between 19 and 24 degrees. After Wednesday, the city will again bask in the sunshine as temperatures will climb. The high is forecast to return to 27 degrees on Thursday. From Friday, it will top 30 degrees.

Last Sunday marked the solar term of xiaoman in the lunar calendar, which means the weather will become damper and warmer.
