Hot again today, wet at weekend

DOWNPOURS will hit the city over the weekend, bringing some coolness after the wave of hot weather.
Forecasters said that under the influence of a subtropical high, temperatures yesterday climbed to 36.8 degrees Celsius, making it the year’s 32nd “high temperature” day, when the mercury tops 35 degrees.
It is set to stay at 34 degrees today, according to Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The heat is expected to break tomorrow, when thunderstorms will sweep across the city. Temperatures are forecast to fall to 31 degrees.
Sunday will be cloudy as high pressure is set to dominate. But residents are still advised to be braced for intermittent rain.
Next Monday, the temperature is expected to rise to 34 degrees.
Typhoon Hato has hit some coastal regions hard in southern China, but it has brought in fresh air to Shanghai. However, light ozone pollution with that can occur in hot weather was recorded yesterday. That may continue today. Air quality will be fine over the weekend.
Wednesday marked the start of chushu on the Chinese lunar calendar, denoting the end of summer. Chushu runs to September 6, during which period the average temperature is usually around 27 degrees.
