Here comes Dashu, or Great Heat day...

SOLAR term Dashu, also known as great heat, falls on today and it signifies that Shanghai is entering the dog days of the year.

According to Chinese tradition, this solar term is divided into three periods. During the first period, young fireflies awake and break their warm shells -- which often lie on withered grass -- to see the world. The second period is marked with muggy weather and wet soil. Thundershowers will fall in the third period and bring some coolness, which indicates that autumn follows.

Friday is the third day with an orange heat wave alert this week with the mercury hitting 39 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued the orange alert at 9:14am this morning. Minhang District was marked as the hottest district with a high of 39.2 degrees, followed by Songjiang District which recorded the high at 39.1 degrees.

The sizzling condition is expected to last into the end of this month with the high to be between 36 and 38 degrees.
