Heavy rains to lash city for 3 days

SHANGHAI residents can expect three stormy days after Super Typhoon Dujuan, which struck Taiwan yesterday, makes a landfall for the second time in Fujian Province today.
Citizens who have planned a trip during the National Day holiday will not be affected by the weather because the typhoon’s effect is likely to end by Thursday morning, the National Day.
But they are being advised to check with relevant authorities for flight and train cancellations before making the trip on Thursday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.
The winds are forecast to keep increasing in Shanghai. Dujuan’s peripheral flows, as well as a low pressure that may trigger after the landfall, will dump rainfalls of 40 to 80 millimeters in the city. Some parts of the city may see a rainfall of up to 100 millimeters.
The heaviest rainfall is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
With a weak influence still left by the typhoon, and combined with a cold front, it will continue to rain on Thursday morning but will turn cloudy later in the day. The city will then be dominated by a cold high pressure over the weekend that will ensure a mix of sun and clouds in the skies.
The cold front and the typhoon will cool the city down with the high dropping to 24 degrees Celsius and the low in the teens. The first half of next week is expected to be even cooler with another round of rain brought by a low trough. The high will slip to 22 degrees on Tuesday and climb up slightly to 23 degrees on Wednesday, when clear skies return.
Due to the cold chill, there is a possibility that the local weather bureau will announce the arrival of autumn on Friday if the daily average temperature stays below 22 degrees for four straight days.
