Heavy rains bring down temperatures

THE Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued two yellow alerts for rain storm and lightning yesterday afternoon when heavy rains swept through the city from south to north due to Super Typhoon Dujuan’s peripheral flows.

By 8pm, rains still lashed Chongming County with a precipitation of nearly 60 millimeters. In other districts it had rained between 30 to 50 millimeters.

The water levels on the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek also surpassed the alert levels. The water level of Huangpu River at the Wusongkou area reached 4.92 meters yesterday morning and kept rising. The water level of Suzhou Creek also rose to 4.8 meters.

Authority quickly built temporary dikes along the river to prevent water from pouring into the city.

Officials with the Hongkou District floodgate station along the Suzhou Creek opened the water gate to lower the water level.

The rains cooled the temperatures. The benchmark Xujiahui weather station recorded a high of 23.7 degrees Celsius.

The influence of Dujuan, which was downgraded to a tropical depression now, will remain today but there will be some respite from the rains in the day. However, a cold front moving into the city at night is likely to intensify the showers again. The rains are expected to taper off tomorrow, the start of National Day holiday.
