Heat-related cases up as mercury soars

TWO people suffering from heatstrokes were admitted to Shanghai Fengxian District Central Hospital yesterday.

Both of them are in coma.

The hospital said one of the patients, a 46-year-old migrant woman from Yunnan Province, fainted and fell down on the road about 4pm on Thursday. The medics used “ice blanket” and “ice hat” to bring her body temperature down.

The other patient was an elderly woman who slept without a fan or air-conditioner.

She was transferred to the hospital from another hospital at 9pm on Thursday and was suffering multiple organ problems.

Deng Xingqi, a doctor at the Fengxian hospital, told Shanghai Daily that kids, elderly, pregnant women and people with heart disease or blood pressure are prone to suffer from heatstrokes. People are being advised to stay indoors and drink more water instead of coffee and alcohol.

An official with Xinhua Hospital said the hospital’s daily average intake of patients rose to about 15,000 with most of them suffering from respiratory, heart and cerebral vessel diseases.

The orange heat wave alert was also issued yesterday — the third this week — with the mercury hitting 39 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.

The sizzling condition is expected to last until the end of the month.
