Heat eased by thundershowers with major respite to be expected Tuesday

CITY'S continuous heat has been eased by some scattered thundershowers Thursday with the mercury at benmark Xujiahui weather station being pushed down to below 30 degrees Celsius by 2:30pm, forecasters said.

However, the hot weather with a high of over 35 degrees are forecast to last through Monday next week and starting Tuesday, an significant respite from the heat wave is expected.

Shanghai issued this summer’s third red alert for heat wave at 8:10am Thursday morning, warning that the temperature is likely to top 40 degrees again.

By 9:50am, most districts recorded their temperatures between 36 and 37 degrees.

After some downpours produced by the thunderstorm hit part districts, the affected areas' temperature soon dropped below 35 degrees at 2:25pm. But meanwhile, the other places received no rain still saw their temperature exceeding 38 degrees and one monitoring station even recorded a high of 42.4 degrees.

Some residents reported that there was some hail in Xuhui District and the Pudong New Area -- where haily weather occurred on Tuesday this week -- due to the severe convective weather. Xuhui District was also claimed with strong gusts.
