Free WiFi on Metro Line 13

PASSENGERS on Metro Line 13 trains can connect to free WiFi under a trial scheme, the Metro operator said yesterday.

This is the first time that WiFi has been made available on Shanghai’s Metro network.

The service is said to have a speed of at least 100 megabits per second and cover the length of Line 13.

Passengers access the service by entering their cellphone numbers and verification code, said Metro operator Shanghai Shentong.

When tested by a Shanghai Daily reporter yesterday, the connection was smooth and fast. But while the WiFi service was stable at stations, the signal was lost on moving trains.

The log-in page states that the other Metro lines will gradually also offer the service, but Shanghai Shentong declined to comment on this.

The city already has public WiFi services on some buses, railway stations, airports and areas such as People’s Square and Lujiazui.
