Flights canceled as super typhoon nears the coast

DOMESTIC airlines have cancelled over 20 flights scheduled for today and tomorrow between Shanghai and southern Chinese cities due to the impact of Super Typhoon Nepartak.

China Eastern and Shanghai airlines have cancelled all inbound and outbound flights between Shanghai and Taiwan today. Over 20 flights from other mainland cities to the island were also cancelled, the carrier announced.

The local carrier Spring Airlines cancelled two flights between Hongqiao airport and Xiamen in southeast Fujian Province and another two flights between Pudong airport and the Xiamen city for both today and tomorrow.

Juneyao Airlines has cancelled eight flights between Shanghai and Taiwan as well as Fuzhou and Xiamen in Fujian Province scheduled for today. Another three flights between Shanghai and Fujian Province scheduled for tomorrow were also canceled.

Air China and China Southern Airlines have cancelled their flights between Shanghai and Taiwan today.

Ticket sales for 32 train services scheduled to travel between Shanghai and southeast China’s Xiamen and Fuzhou, and south China’s Shenzhen and Guangzhou today and Saturday have been suspended, the city’s railway bureau said yesterday. It is still unknown if the affected services will be cancelled, as it will depend on the impact of the typhoon.

The city’s flood control authorities are also on standby as super typhoon nears the coast.

Shanghai’s flood control officials have urged all districts and county authorities to make all necessary preparations to protect citizens and property.

The districts of Songjiang, Jinshan, Qingpu and Jiading have been told to prepare for flood discharges and some residents in coastal areas are being evacuated.

The water, gas, electricity, sanitation and telecommunication authorities have been ordered to prepare for the worst.

Shanghai residents should prepare for stormy weather and flooding from upstream, say officials.

According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the city will be hit by downpours accompanied by gale-force winds over the weekend.

Coastal areas will see level-8 wind (962kph-74kph), which can cause waves of over 5.5-meters high.

Nepartak’s center was about 420 kilometers southeast of Taiwan’s Hualien yesterday, and continued to head northwest at a speed of 15-20kph, said the bureau. It was expected to make landfall in eastern Taiwan this morning and then hit the coast of Fujian Province by tomorrow morning.

The typhoon will weaken before moving further northwest and hitting the west side of Zhejiang Province.
