Electric car owners get new way to pay

OWNERS of electric cars can now use their transportation cards at some charging posts, an official from a trade group said yesterday.

About 200 of the 500 or so posts in Shanghai are owned by members of industry association EVUnion, and these are the ones that now accept the new payment method, said Wang Shangkun, the group’s responsible person.

People can also use Alipay and WeChat Payment at the posts, he said.

To promote the posts, charging will be free until the end of October. At the city’s 300 other posts, the price will remain between 1 yuan (16 US cents) to 1.60 yuan per kilowatt-hour, he said.

Wang said he expects there to be 3,000 posts capable of accepting travel cards and online payment methods by the end of the year.

“In the past, people had to buy prepaid cards from each post operating firm. Now they can use the same payment method at any EVUnion-member post,” he said.

A total of 20 of the new posts opened for business yesterday in the parking lot of China Art Museum.
