Doctors rush to help disaster victims

SEVEN doctors from Shanghai rushed to Yancheng City in Jiangsu Province yesterday to help victims of Thursday’s tornado and hailstorms, joining the first national medical rescue team for the battered area.

The group includes two doctors from Ruijin Hospital, four from Huashan Hospital and one from Shanghai East Hospital.

Chen Yanxi, director of the emergency surgery department at Shanghai East Hospital, is also a member of China’s international emergency medical team and he is serving as the deputy chief of the national medical rescue group during this disaster.

He has taken part in many emergency operations, including the factory blast in Kunshan in Jiangsu in 2014 that killed 75 people, and has received training in the US, Israel and Russia.

To join the rescue team, Li Lei, from the intensive care unit and thoracic surgery department at Ruijin Hospital, missed his son’s primary school graduation ceremony yesterday.

Intense downpours, hailstorms and a tornado were reported in parts of Yancheng on Thursday afternoon.

Ninety-eight people were killed and more than 800 were injured. Buildings, trees, vehicles and electricity poles were also destroyed.
