Cruise passengers get visa-free entry to Japan

CHINESE tourists visiting Japan as part of a cruise will from next month be able to do so without a visa, a travel agent said yesterday.
The new policy will save people time and money, said Yang Lei, who handles cruise bookings for online tour company Ctrip.
Under current rules, Chinese people have to pay about 200 yuan (US$32) for a tourist visa to Japan, and the process of applying for one can take several days, Yang said.
The exemption will apply to 11 cruise ships, five of which have Shanghai as their home port. The quintet comprises Royal Caribbean’s “Mariner of The Seas,” Bohai Ferry’s “Chinese Taishan,” and Costa Cruise’s “Costa Victoria,” “Costa Atlantica” and “Costa Serena.”
Full details of the new scheme have yet to be released, though local customs officials told Shanghai Daily that a condition of the visa exemption policy is that tourists must leave Japan aboard the vessel on which they arrived.
According to figures from the China Cruise and Yacht Industry Association, more than 1 million people from China’s mainland will go on a cruise this year, up from 700,000 last year.
Short trips of less than a week to South Korea and Japan are likely to be the most popular, it said.
