Cold today and colder tomorrow
FREEZING temperatures are sweeping across the city.
The city’s meteorological bureau issued a blue cold wave alert at 11am yesterday, warning that temperatures would plummet by at least 8 degrees Celsius within 48 hours.
The icy gusts, caused by strong cold front from the north, will push down today’s temperatures to between 0 and 3 degrees, forecasters said.
Tomorrow, a low of minus 1 degree is expected in downtown areas, with roads becoming icy. The outskirts will see frost and temperature lows ranging up to minus 5 degrees.
The chilly weather will continue through the first half of next week, with the low around zero and the high around 6 degrees. From Wednesday, the mercury will start to climb, forecasters said.
They predicted that the temperature for Chinese New Year’s Eve on Friday and Chinese New Year’s Day on Saturday would hover between 3 to 9 degrees.
Shanghai Road Administration Bureau has launched an emergency plan to ensure safety for the travel rush around Spring Festival. More than 100 rescue teams are on stand-by, the bureau said.
