Civilian drone pilots are ready to serve

A TEAM of civilian drone pilots has been set up in Hongkou District to provide local authorities with a key support service in the event of a major fire or natural disaster.

According to an official from the Armed Forces, the group comprises 10 model aircraft pilots.

They are all members of a flying club and are very experienced, the official, surnamed Kai, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

Their skills in drone photography will be a major asset in the event of a fire or other such disaster, when on-the-spot monitoring can be the difference between life and death, Kai said.

“Unmanned aerial vehicles can be deployed much more quickly than helicopters, and can operate effectively even at low altitudes,” he said.

“Also, by having access to a team of experienced pilots when we need them but without having to employ them on a full-time basis, the arrangement is very cost-effective,” he said.

Members of the team will provide their own aircraft and be remunerated on a per-assignment basis, he said.
