City’s first winter snows fall in rural Chongming

RURAL Chongming Island witnessed the city’s first snows yesterday evening, while drizzle and sleet were reported in some downtown areas, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Today will be mostly cold but sunny, with a low of about 2 degrees Celsius in downtown areas and zero in the suburbs.

The maximum high across the city will be a chilly 6 degrees, the bureau said.

Suburban Jinshan District saw the highest temperatures yesterday, as the mercury rose to 11 degrees, while the high in downtown Xujiahui was just 9.1 degrees.

Tomorrow and Saturday will remain sunny, though might be a little cooler than today, with a low of 1 degree in downtown areas and sub-zero temperatures likely in the suburbs.

The weather will be warmer on Sunday and Monday with a low of about 5 degrees, the bureau said.

Health warning

The recent cold snap has seen a 20 percent increase in the number of people seeking hospital treatment.

The most common ailments are sore throats, colds and fevers, a doctor told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

“Quite a few people have sought treatment for sore throats, which they got after staying in air-conditioned rooms for too long,” said Dr Shen Zhenhe from Shanghai Ren’ai Hospital.

The doctor advised maintaining a room temperature of between 18 and 20 degree Celsius at home, and drinking plenty of water.

If an air conditioner is used, it is a good idea to have a bowl of water in the room to boost humidity, he said.

“People using under electric blankets have also had problems such as dry skin and rashes,” he said.

“Anyone who has a weak immune system can easily catch a cold or even pneumonia due to the rapid change in temperature,” he said.

Several people have needed treatment for burns and scalds after accidents involving electric blankets and hot-water bags, Dr Shen said.
