City hit by hail, thunderstorm

THE Shanghai Meteorological Bureau last night issued an orange hail alert — the first since 2009 — after the city was hit by sudden thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Weathermen said it was triggered by powerful thunderclouds in city’s western and southern areas. Districts being affected by hail included Qingpu, Songjiang, Minhang and Jinshan.
A blue gale alert, which was issued with a yellow lightning alert at 9:02pm, was upgraded to an orange one as well at 9:46pm.
Meanwhile, the influence of a cold front is expected to slow down the warming trend. The highest temperature will drop back to mid twenties from yesterday’s high of 30.5 degrees Celsius recorded at the Xujiahui weather station, forecasters said.
Suburban Songjiang District saw its maximum temperature climb to 31.1 degrees, the highest among all districts.
A lightly polluted pollution level was recorded with the soaring temperatures. The air quality index peaked to 134 at 9am with the concentration of PM2.5 topping 100 micrograms per cubic meter, four times the safe guideline of 25 set by the World Health Organization.
