City closes floodgates, issues warning as river waters reaches alert level

THE city's flood prevention authority issued a flood alert this morning as water levels of Huangpu River exceeded the alert line due to impacts of typhoon Malakas and tides.

Gates on the flood prevention dams have been closed along the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek after the water level of the river reached the highest of 4.88 meters this morning, 33 centimeters above the alert level, the Shanghai Flood Prevention Office said.

It issued a blue alert, the lowest of the four-tier alert system, but warned about high flood risk because the typhoon coincides with the eighth major tides to the city this year.

The typhoon will bring strong winds and showers to the city with the impact lasting till tomorrow night.

Showers are expected to hit the city's east Pudong New Area as well as the outskirt Fengxian, Jinshan and Chongming districts today, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Malakas, the 16th typhoon in 2016, was observed 510 kilometers off Shanghai's east coast at the East China Sea at 11am today, bringing winds of up to 50 meters per second as it moved northwards, according to the bureau.
