City airports on high alert for further disruptions

CHINA’S air traffic regulator yesterday issued its highest alert for flight disruptions at Shanghai airports saying delays and cancellations this afternoon will be “specially severe.”

The Civil Aviation Administration of China’s red alert anticipated “busy air traffic flow” between 2pm and 6pm over the city today, its website said, without giving details.

During the period, capacity at Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport would be reduced by 75 percent, it said.

According to the administration, the restriction will mean at least 200 passenger aircraft unable to take off and more than 360 flights delayed.

Flights from Nanchang, Ganzhou, Jiujiang, Yichun, Jinggangshan, Jingdezhen, Wuyishan, Jianqiao, Luqiao and Wenzhou will be affected. Disruptions will also be experienced on flights to Linyi, Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Huai’an, Yancheng, Changzhou, Yangzhou and Nantong, the administration said.

There was no mention of any impact on international flights.

The regulator didn’t say why there would be delays but the alert is the highest since it began issuing daily warnings earlier this month saying frequent delays and cancellations affecting east China’s airports were due to a combination of military maneuvers and bad weather.

The administration has set up a four level alert system, similar to those for weather, for flight delays and cancellation. The alerts are blue, yellow, orange and red, indicating normal, serious, severe and specially severe.

Passengers are advised to contact their airlines before heading to the airport.

China Eastern Airlines has already cancelled some 19 flights this afternoon.

The regulator issued a yellow alert on Sunday for flights between 2pm and 6pm yesterday due to stormy weather.

Some 120 flights were cancelled and another 100 delayed at Hongqiao and Pudong, Shanghai Airport Authority said.
