City aims to cut VOC for clean air

SHANGHAI will implement a comprehensive plan to cut emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and improve pollution prevention capability of industries which emit VOC excessively, authorities said yesterday.
The move will help enforce the five-year Clean Air Action Plan (2013-2017), introduced last year, which aims to improve the city’s air quality by reducing the PM2.5 (particulate matter of 2.5 micrometers or less) concentration by about 20 percent by 2017 compared with 2012.
VOC are organic chemicals, including benzene and acetone, that evaporate or vaporize readily and are harmful to human health and the environment.
About 180 people from heavily polluting companies and environmental departments in the Pudong New Area as well as Minhang and another 10 districts were trained in VOC emission control by the city’s environmental protection bureau.
These firms are involved in organic chemicals, synthetic materials, ship coating, automobile painting, equipment coating, production of ink and paint, said the government.
