Chongming’s Metro link coming soon

CONSTRUCTION will begin on the Metro line linking Chongming Island with the city by the end of the year, the island’s district authority said yesterday.

The line will run from Pudong’s Jinqiao area to Chongming’s Chenjia Town.

It has been approved by the city government and is awaiting approval by the National Development and Reform Commission, Chongming District director Tang Hailong said yesterday.

The district authorities will build and upgrade roads to connect with the new line.

The line will have four stops — on Fuxing Island and three in Chenjia Town.

The main transport link for residents is the Yangtze River tunnel. But the trip can often take hours due to congestion, especially on public holidays.

Zhang Yongheng, director of Chongming District Transport Committee, said the four major roads to be expanded were: Chongming Ecological Avenue, the Beiyan Highway, the Jianshe Highway and a sightseeing ring road.

“The 40 kilometer Chongming Ecological Avenue, which connects Chenjia Town to the Chengqiao area, will have lanes for buses and bicycles,” Zhang said.

“The first phase of the sightseeing ring road will link Chengqiao to the Beiyan Highway.

“Visitors will be able to enjoy a view of Yangtze River levees when taking a sightseeing bus ride along the ring road.”

Zhang said construction and expansion work on the four roads would start next year. The district has drawn up a blueprint to make Chongming a “national ecological island.”
