Chongming goes big on bike lanes

IN an effort to woo tourists and nature lovers, Chongming County has reserved 350 kilometers for cycling lanes with the major 240km ring road set to be around the island.
According to the county government, the cycling lanes will also include five smaller ring roads around its most popular tourist attractions — Chongming New City, Dongping National Forest Park, Dongtan and Hengsha Island.
Part of the lanes have already been completed and workers are currently working on road signs and setting up stops for resting, local sports authorities said.
The entire stretch is expected to be ready for use by the end of year.
Chongming has always been a popular destination for riders.
According to the local government, about 80,000 citizens biked around the island and dikes in 2014 alone.
The county has hosted the annual Tour of Chongming Island road cycling race since 2003.
With the new cycling lanes, authorities hope to attract more visitors to the county, known for its ecological beauty.
The cycling lanes will link several homestay hotels on the route to allow bikers to take a break during their tour of the island.
“As Chongming is dedicated to building itself into an ecological getaway and a garden of Shanghai, it is essential to build such green paths for bicycle riders, a greener way to commute,” said Shi Jianhua, a political advisor from Chongming who came up with the proposal.
In 2012, several local advisors proposed that the government should build special cycling lanes as more and more people were biking as a fitness regime.
A recent survey of 330 foreigners in the city found a good 54.55 percent of them wanted more space on the roads made available for cyclists.
They said cycling worked both as exercise as well as for transportation.
