Chongming gets a boost, to become a district

THE city’s last remaining county, Chongming, will soon become a district as the Shanghai government works to improve the city’s layout and promote the areas’ sustainable development.

That will mean significant changes in its administrative division, organization framework and economic, social and administrative management function and rights.

Chongming will be transformed from a countryside county to an urban area, ensuring a budget boost from the government and resource allocation in all areas.

Public services will be improved and will be on par to that of other districts.

The transformation will boost Chongming’s economic development and bring the new district’s government closer to the city authorities.

Residents too will enjoy the same level of comforts and benefits in transport, housing, travel, culture and entertainment, agriculture, education and health care like those elsewhere in the city.

Among the projects being considered is a Metro line linking Chongming with the Pudong New Area.
