Chaos as Metro renovations begin

PART of the People’s Square Metro Station were closed for repairs yesterday, causing chaos for morning commuters.
Normal operations will resume on February 11 at what is the busiest station on the Metro network, linking lines 1, 2 and 8.
During the renovations, Metro lines 1 and 8 will not stop at the station. Metro line 2 is not affected.
“I left home 20 minutes earlier than usual,” a commuter surnamed Shen told Shanghai Daily. Shen, who lives in Baoshan District, works in the Lujiazui area. She used to take Line 1 and transfer to Line 2 at People’s Square.
“I took a detour today, taking Line 1 to Hanzhong Road Station first to transfer to Line 12, and then go to Nanjing Road W. Station for Line 2.”
But Shen thinks traffic will drop during the Spring Festival holidays which begin on January 27.
“I think there will be fewer people in the following days,” she said.
A Metro worker at Hanzhong Road Station who asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media told Shanghai Daily traffic on Line 12 surged sharply yesterday.
The station connects Lines 1, 12 and 13.
“About 8:30am, some passengers could not get on board until the sixth train arrived. But the traffic greatly declined after 9am,” the worker said.
The Metro operator said there was a big increase in traffic at connecting stations for lines 1 and 8.
