Bullet train services hit by Typhoon Matmo

A TOTAL of 22 bullet trains scheduled to depart from or pass through the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station were canceled yesterday due to the influence of Typhoon Matmo, the railway authority said.

This follows 19 cancellations on Wednesday.

Among the 22 trains affected, 20 were due to leave from Shanghai Hongqiao station, while the other two were to have passed through.

They had been due to travel to the coastal cities of Fuzhou and Xiamen in southeastern China’s Fujian Province and Shenzhen in the southern  province of Guangdong.

These areas are expected to be affected by Typhoon Matmo over the coming days. Severe gales hit a number of cities in Fujian yesterday.

Bullet trains to Shanghai’s neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu were unaffected by the weather.

Meanwhile, 17 Indian sailors were rescued early yesterday morning by the Shanghai-based Donghai Rescue Bureau, after their cargo ship had overturned in waters off Fujian due to the influence of Typhoon Matmo.

A helicopter sent to the scene ferried the crew to a rescue ship at around 4am.

No one was injured in the incident, according to the Donghai Rescue Bureau.
