Boost for energy-saving buses

SHANGHAI is to pay city bus companies from 150,000 yuan (US$14,270) to 550,000 yuan for each energy-saving or new-energy vehicle they purchase, depending on the model.
In addition, district governments will pay subsidies of up to 165,000 yuan a year for the first eight years for each new-energy bus to cover maintenance and running costs.
The city government says at least 60 percent of new buses added to the city’s fleet should be energy-saving or new energy vehicles from this year.
The city’s two main bus companies — Shanghai Bashi Group and Pudong Bus Co — own a total of 140,000 buses, with more than 10,000 of them running on diesel.
The city government has set a target that at least 30 percent of the city’s public buses should be energy-saving or new-energy vehicles by 2017.
Meanwhile, a new device to reduce emissions will soon be fitted to all city buses running on diesel, the Bashi company said. The equipment is already fitted to 26 buses on the No. 960, 60 and 103 routes and has been on trial since 2012. The device has cut emissions by some 90 percent.
It is to be fixed to 200 additional buses soon, while improvements are being made to reduce its cost before it is more widely adopted. No details of how much it costs were revealed.
