Boarding 71 bus to be easier as route passes trial period

THE No. 71 bus route has achieved the targets set for it during a three-month trial.

The route, which started its trial operation on February 1, runs on a bus-only lane under Yan’an Elevated Road.

The city’s transportation commission, announcing that the project’s targets had been met, said it would work with Shanghai Ba-Shi Public Transportation Group, which operates the 71 route, to make the most use of the network and to set up a shuttle bus route to connect with stops along the 71 route.

The move comes in response to residents wanting more and smoother transferring options. The 709 bus route will connect to Bus Route 71’s Hangdong Road Station so that residents living in Hanghua area in Minhang District can board the 71. New stops on the No.72 bus route in Fangda Xincun in Changning District will enable residents there to transfer onto Yan’an Road more conveniently.

A shuttle bus route will also be set up to ferry passengers between Hongqiao Transportation Hub and Shenkun Road Station, a terminal of No. 71, giving passengers from Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station the opportunity to use the 71 route.

The bus company will produce a guide on transferring options along the 71 route, and this will be delivered to passengers by conductors.

According to the commission, daily traffic on No. 71 averaged 42,000 trips in April, up from 41,500 in March and 39,000 in February. Weekday traffic in April hit 46,000. The project forecast daily traffic volume at 35,000 to 50,000 — a normal bus route typically records 10,000 trips a day.

The authority added the running speed of the buses had risen to nearly 18 kilometers an hour during morning rush hours in April, which cut a single journey along the whole route to 59 minutes. That speed is 20 percent faster than for other vehicles going the same distance along Yan’an Road.

Local authorities, maintenance and operation companies also introduced measures, including more training for drivers and conductors and improving the traffic lights system, to fix issues arising during the trial operation.
