Bad weather causes havoc at airports

A TOTAL of 160 flights were canceled and more than 400 were delayed yesterday due to heavy rains and poor visibility at Shanghai’s two airports.
The bad weather began affecting takeoffs and landings at the Hongqiao airport at 10am, and by noon more than 200 flights had been delayed, while four scheduled arrivals had to be diverted to Pudong, the airport authority said.
Conditions at Hongqiao improved in the afternoon but worsened at Pudong, resulting in three Shanghai Airlines flights being diverted from the latter to the former, officials said.
China Southern Airlines issued a delay alert at 1pm, after 14 of its flights had been held up for more than an hour.
Shanghai-based Juneyao and Spring Airlines both canceled several flights due to the bad weather. Their passengers were given the option of a seat on an alternative flight or a full refund.
Hong Kong was also affected by the bad weather yesterday, resulting in three overseas flights originating from Shanghai being canceled and 20 others being delayed.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow thunderstorm alert at 6am yesterday, and a yellow rainstorm alert — its first of the year — at 8:43am.
The city has a four-color weather warning system, starting from blue as the lowest level and rising through yellow, orange and red.
The heaviest rainfall in Shanghai yesterday — about 32 millimeters — was recorded at the Formula 1 circuit in Jiading District. Baoshan District and the Xujiahui area of the city both reported 25mm of rain, the bureau said.
The heavy rain also pushed down temperatures, with the high reaching just 25 degrees Celsius. It should be dry today and tomorrow, though a little cooler, with a low of about 17 degrees. More rain is forecast for Monday.
