Another 2 scorching days ahead

SCORCHING weather will bake the city for another two days with the highest temperatures remaining around 38 degrees Celsius, weather forecasters said yesterday.
The city weather will be dominated by a subtropical high pressure front until tomorrow with dry and sunny weather bringing the temperature up to 38 degrees, said Fu Yi, the chief forecasters with the Shanghai Metrological Bureau.
A wind from the east will bring cool air from the sea later this week to cool down the sizzling temperature with showers, he said.
The temperature will reach 38 degrees today and tomorrow and drop to 36 on Wednesday.
Thursday’s high will be around 35 degrees with cloud arriving, the bureau said.
The recent period of high temperatures will end on Friday when the high temperature is set to drop below 35 degrees.
The bureau issued an orange alert — the second-highest in China’s four-level warning system — at 9:22am as the temperature quickly soared to 38 degrees around noon.
Under the orange alert, workers who are exposed to high temperatures must reduce their working hours.
Due to wind from southwest, the city’s suburban coastal regions, including Fengxian and Jiading, will be cooler than downtown areas, Fu said.
The scorching weather since July 26 has seen one man die of sunstroke and made two others suffer severe sunstrokes.
A 60-year-old man was found unconscious in a garden on Dongfang Road in Pudong New Area and died of sunstroke after being sent to hospital early last week, according to officials.
The bureau asked local residents, especially seniors, to keep indoors around noon and avoid long-term exposure under the sun.
