Airport subway for terminals

SHANGHAI Airport Authority yesterday started taking bids for the construction of an underground subway to connect the two terminal buildings with new satellite terminals at the Pudong International Airport.

As per the plan, the west line will link Terminal 1 with Satellite 1 and the east line will connect T2 and S2.

The subway project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. Construction is scheduled to begin in November on the two satellite terminal buildings that will cover a total of 500,000 square meters. They are scheduled to open in 2019.

Passengers will be able to check in at one of the two existing terminal buildings and then take the subway to get to the new facility, said Li Derun, president of the Shanghai Airport Authority.

With 119 departure gates, the third terminal will be the largest of its kind in the world, the airport authority said.

There are also plans to build around 1,000 accommodation rooms in the terminals.

Spread over 120,000 square meters, the rooms will offer a place for passengers to rest. The public area will have a reception hall, restaurants, meeting room, gymnasium and shops.

By 2020, after renovations and new additions, the Pudong airport will be able to handle 80 million passengers and 4.7 million tons of cargo per year.

During the National Day holiday between October 1-7, the number of passengers reached about 1.2 million at the Pudong airport — a 7 percent increase on year.

The airport handled approximately 8,700 passenger flights during the holiday period.

Over half of the passengers were flying overseas.

Most outbound passengers flew to Japan and Thailand, the airport authority said.
