Airport passengers advised to allow extra time
PASSENGERS are urged to arrive at Pudong International Airport earlier than usual to leave enough time for immigration checks during the Spring Festival travel rush.
Since the annual travel rush for the festival began on January 13, Shanghai Airport Immigration Station has recorded 1.03 million passengers traveling outbound and inbound — more than 100,000 people per day on average.
As overseas tourism is an increasingly popular option among Chinese, Pudong International Airport recorded a record high passenger flow.
Among all passengers traveling outbound, more than 370,000, or 64 percent of the total in the past 10 days, departed from Pudong airport, up 5 percent from the first 10 days of last year’s Spring Festival travel rush.
Japan, South Korea, America and Southeast Asia remain the most popular destinations. Foreigners working or studying in China are also heading back home, contributing to the soaring passenger flows at the airport.
The number of inbound passengers has stabilized at around 40,000 per day, many of whom choose to use the expanded self-service immigration inspection facilities.
On Sunday alone, more than 9,000 passengers, who hold passports with electronic chips and have registered their information at Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection, used the self-service. Immigration inspection authorities recommend eligible passengers use the self-serve inspection machines to reduce waiting times.
