Airport authority inks WeChat deal with Tencent

PASSENGERS will be able to check flight information, check-in and even buy insurance for flight delays through WeChat as the Shanghai Airport Authority today signed an agreement with tech giant Tencent.

Passengers will be able to type in their flight number on the airport authority's Wechat account and receive information about their flights and the weather at the airport.

Passengers with only carry-on luggage will also be able to check-in with a QR code on their mobile phones, said Wu Yi, manager with the payment department of Tencent.

"The company will launch English and other foreign language versions," said Wu. WeChat now has 800 million domestic users and 200 million users abroad.

Passengers will also be able to buy flight-delay insurance for 20 yuan through Wechat payment. If a flight is delayed by over 30 minutes, those with the insurance will receive a 30 yuan reward on Wechat. The amount of the reward will increase if the delay is longer.

"The insurance will help calm passengers during lengthy flight delays," said Jing Yiming, the airport authority's president.

The airport authority didn't give a timeline for when the service will be available.
