Air improves after ‘worst July day’

AIR quality is set to improve today after reaching heavily polluted last night, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.
This morning, quality is forecast to be medium polluted with the Air Quality Index expected to be between 140 and 160. The main pollutant will be tiny PM2.5 particles.
By afternoon, the level will improve to between 105 and 125 — or slightly polluted — said officials.
They said yesterday’s pollution reached medium level at around 5pm.
By 9pm, most of the city was reported to be heavily polluted. The AQI reached 254 and readings of PM2.5 pollutants were more than double the national standard density.
Winds from both east and west prevented pollutants from dispersing, added the center.
A well-known amateur meteorologist claimed that yesterday’s air pollution was almost double the worst recorded in Shanghai in July since figures were made public in 1997.
Chen Wenhui said on his Weibo microblog account that the density of PM10 pollutants approached 300 micrograms per cubic meter — twice the previous high.
The monitoring center did not confirm the claim, saying that it was caused by a complicated meteorological condition.
