800 punished for parking violations at Shanghai Disney Resort

POLICE in the Pudong New Area said yesterday that they have handled more than 800 cases of illegal parking near Shanghai Disney Resort since the start of a crackdown on April 26.

“A total of 523 vehicles have been towed away and 284 others were issued with tickets,” said Wu Qiuping, an official in charge of traffic law enforcement at the Public Security Office of Shanghai International Tourism and Resort Zone.

“In the early days of the campaign we found that most of the offenders were people who worked in the area, but there was a spike over the Labor Day holiday as the area attracted a lot of visitors,” he said.

Many of the offenders were people who parked illegally on the Shendi ring roads, despite the fact that there are seven official parking lots — with 10,688 spaces — located within easy reach of the theme park, he said.

There are also two overspill lots, one of which is located on Tanghuang Road and the other on Zhoudeng Highway, the official said.

“When there are no spaces left in the seven official parking areas, police officers will direct people to the overspill lots,” Wu said.

As well as the crackdown on motorists who violate parking regulations, Pudong police have issued punishments and fines to almost 600 cyclists since April 26, Wu said.

The bike riders were guilty of assorted misdemeanors, such as using the wrong lane, he said.

Meanwhile, the operators of the Disney theme park announced yesterday that they will today begin a six-week trial period.

The tourist attraction is scheduled to open to the public on June 16.

On the countdown to that date, members of staff and invited guests will try out the various rides and facilities, the company said yesterday.
