40.2 °C! City scorches to another high again

THE mercury touched 40.2 degrees Celsius today under the subtropical high, renewing this year's record again, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

This reading is the third highest in city's weather history since 1873.

The weather bureau issued an orange heat wave alert at 9:17am this morning and upgraded it to a red one -- the highest in a three-level color system -- at 1:12pm to warn the threat of extremely hot weather with a high of up 40 degrees.

It's this year's second red heat wave alert. The first one was released on Saturday last week.

According to the weather bureau, the record high in weather history was 40.8 degrees on August 7 in 2013. The second highest was a high of 40.6 degrees, which occured three times in July and August in 2013.

China enters "Zhong Fu" -- the middle and hottest period of dog days "San Fu", also known as dog days of summer.

Some afternoon thundershowers are still expected today.
